Off to the May Day celebration! April 1916 3. In the International lies the focus of the class organisation of the proletariat ... 4. the duty to carry out the decisions of the International takes precedence over all other organisational duties … (Guiding Principles) Comrades and comrades! For the second time, the day of May 1st rises above the sea of blood of mass butchery. For the second time, the international worker’s holiday finds the proletarian International shattered into ruins, while the fighting forces of people-liberating socialism, slaughter each other as unresisting cannon fodder for imperialism. The socialist International has been down for two years. And what have the workers of all countries, what have the peoples gained? Millions of men have already lost their lives at the behest of the bourgeoisie. Millions have been reduced to miserable cripples. Millions of women have been widowed, their children orphaned, millions of women have been filled with unquenchable sorrow and grief.  Not enough!  Hardship and misery, inflation and famine prevail in Germany, France, and Russia. But Belgium, Poland, and Serbia, sucked dry to the blood and marrow of their bones by the vampire of German militarism, resemble vast cemeteries and heaps of rubble. The whole world, the much-vaunted European culture, is perishing in the unleashed anarchy of the world war. And for whose benefit and piety, for what purpose all these horrors and bestialities?  So that the Eastern Albanian Junkers and the capitalist profiteers associated with them can fill their pockets by subjugating and exploiting new countries.  So that the agitators from heavy industry and the army suppliers from the bloody fields of corpses can haul golden harvests into their barns.  So that stock market jobbers make usurious profits with war bonds.  So that food speculators fatten themselves at the expense of the starving people.  So that militarism, the monarchy, the darkest reaction in Germany rise to unprecedented power, to undivided rule. n order to make its worst enemies strong and overconfident, the working class is being led to the slaughter like a herd of sheep. And there is no end to the bloody orgy, indeed, it continues to expand! Tomorrow, perhaps, the genocide will extend to new countries and parts of the world. The German warmongers are pushing hard for war with the United States. Tomorrow, perhaps, we shall draw out the murder iron against new bands of brothers and sisters, against the chests of our American working and fighting comrades! Workers!  Party comrades!  You women of the people!  How long will you calmly and serenely watch the haunting of hell? How long will you endure the crime of human butchery, the misery and hunger?  Remember, as long as the people do not move to make their will known, the genocide will not stop. Or it will only stop when all countries have been brought to the begging staff, when all peoples have been destroyed, when not one stone of the so-called culture has been left upon another.  The rich can ‘hold out’ against war for a long time. They do not suffer from hunger, they have stockpiled abundant supplies, they make the best deals in butchery, they strengthen their political rule through the suicide of the working class.  But we, the working people of all countries, do we want to forge our chains tighter with our own hands for much longer? Worker, comrades of the party! Enough of fratricide! May 1st comes as a reminder, knocking on your hearts, on your conscience. The betrayal of socialism, of the international solidarity of the workers, has plunged the peoples into the ruin of the world war. Only a return to the gospel of liberating socialism, to the proletarian International, can save culture and the cause of the workers from the abyss. Show on May 1st that this gospel lives in your hearts and minds. Prove to the ruling classes that the International, that socialism, is not dead; that they will rise again with new strength like a phoenix from the ashes! The proletarian International cannot be reestablished in Brussels, in The Hague, or in Bern by a few dozen people. It can only rise from the deeds of millions. It can only rise here in Germany, as well as in France, England, and Russia, when the masses of workers everywhere take up the banner of the class struggle themselves and let their voices thunder mightily against genocide. Workers, party comrades and women of the people!  Let this second May Day of the world war not pass without turning it into a demonstration of international socialism, a protest against imperialist butchery. On May 1st we extend our brotherly hand to the people in France, in Belgium, in Russia, in England, in Serbia, in the whole world, across all border barriers and battlefields!  On May 1st we shout in unison by the tens of thousands: Away with the nefarious crime of genocide!  Down with its responsible perpetrators, agitators and beneficiaries!  Our enemies are not the French or Russian people, but the German Junkers, German capitalists and their executive committee: the German government. Let us fight against these mortal enemies of all freedom, fight for everything that means the well-being and the future of the workers' cause, of humanity, and of culture! Stop the war! We want peace! Hurray for socialism! Hail to the Workers' International! Proletarians of all countries, unite!
